Natasha Brown (*1996) is a UK-based South African artist specialising in painting installation. After completing her BA at the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa) in 2018, she was the recipient of the Gaudio Family Foundation Scholarship during her MA at Central Saint Martins (2020-2022). Using the sincerity that accompanies a failed illusion as a starting point, she mixes both painting styles and forms to create tense scenarios that expose the mechanics of both painting and storytelling.
Her practice is concerned with the revealing of mechanics behind both illusion and representation. There is a sincerity present in the obvious trick, the basic, awkward trick that is actually absent of deceit - a ghost under a blanket, an eyeball without a hole in which to live. Natasha’s paintings aim to touch on the contemporary notion of post-truth and what it means to engage in an illusion already revealed or obvious.
